The slowdown

I think that that phrase describes coming to Hawaii. The great slowdown indeed. But what I was referring to was my blogging frequency. I don't think I'll be able to keep up my daily posts like I was before. It's just too hard. There is too much to do here and too little time to do it in. And it's all fun. So rest assured that things are going well.

Yesterday I went to Wal-Mart (on the bus of course) with some friends and it was a fricken blast! I Also got up and ran 3.2 miles at 6 am like I was planning to. Are you proud of me? Anyway, just got a lot of stuff done yesterday and met up with some really cool peeps who I think I'm gonna keep in touch with. Anyway, I'll talk to you all later. Have a wonderful life.

Hail From the Land of Wonder

This weekend has been incredible. First of all, I wrote the coolest rap track out there. You guys have to listen to it. I'll try to publish it on the web so that it's generally available to anyone who wants it. It took me about...10 hours to do, but if you count the 15 or so hours that I spent fruitlessly trying to get past my writers block, it took about the whole weekend.

So, now you know about how much physical activity I got this weekend! On Friday, as I was running, I saw the coolest snake. It was standing right in my way as I ran down the sidewalk. It is as if God wants me to experience everything about Utah there is before I go back to Hawaii.

Also on Friday I got stung by my first bee! Yipee. It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would. So now I don't have to be afraid of the little buggers. It was funny. I was on the phone with someone long distance, and right when I said "hello" I got stung. It was like:

"Hello. Is xxxx there? Oh my gosh, I just got stung by a bee, I'll have to call you back."

So, we've got the snake and the bee thing going on. Also, I've been able to enjoy the spaciousness of my house here before going back to my shoebox in Hawaii. 6 more days.

Now, I'm at work for my final week. It's so strange to know that you are going to be halfway across the globe in less than a week. I'll probably never see these people again (sniffle).

So, lastly, I hung out with a couple girls this weekend. One of them is named Ami Allen and we have been friends since high school. It was fun. We went to Olive Garden and watched Ice Age. That's a funny movie. The second was Monica Nelson from Hawaii. Her dad was a prof there and she lived on Iosepha. We had fun. We mostly drove around and listened to cool tunes. We took a stroll through the park and got some Dairy Queen ice cream. That was a treat to her as there are only about 2 dairy queens on the whole island of Oahu.

Anyhow, good weekend, and a good week to come. I'll keep you all informed of what happens. Peace out.

Snacks and Comfort

So, today I was munching on some chocolate chip cookies and some orange juice and listening to some techno music. It was music that I wrote actually. Call me narcissistic, but I am good at writing techno. I think I was jamming out for about an hour. Then again, every mother thinks her child is beautiful even when the baby is a freak of nature. So it could just be the mother syndrome? Oh no! Am I turning into a mother??? EGADS!!!!!

Kids Do the Darndest Things

Have you ever noticed that kids will do just about anything to catch your attention? Or sometimes they don't know that they are acting out of the ordinary, but indeed, they ARE? Well, yesterday I had one of these experiences. I run about 3 miles a day to stay in shape. Well, my whole family knows this, including the kids. Well, my little neice Maddie noticed that I was getting ready to go for my daily jog. She knows that I am going back to Hawaii in a couple days so she really wanted to hang out with me. As I ran out the door, she said "Stay." I turned around, looked at her and said: "O.K." and then I began my run.

She could not put up with this.

So, I run about two tenths of a mile and turn around and WHAT do I see? Little Maddie, all of 10 years old and three feet in height is running, full speed behind me. I was like: "Maddie, you have to turn around. I go for too far for you to follow me." To this all she would give me is an incessant "NO!" So I kept running thinking that she would get tired, fall behind, and quit and turn around.

NO WAY! By the time we got to the end of the neighborhood (1 mile) she was still running strong and asking me silly questions like: "Are you tired yet? I'm not tired."

So, I decided to let her come with me. Actually, I really don't think it was my decision.

At this point I think I should stop and mention something. Maddie was not wearing any shoes. She had just run a mile on gravel with me barefooted! I couldn't believe her tenacity!

So, at the 1.5 mile mark Maddie started to get tired. She told me she needed rests and yada yada. All the stuff you'd expect from a 10 year old girl. So, I asked her at about 1.7 miles if she wanted me to put her on my back and I'd piggy back her home. When I said this, she doubled her speed, got in front of me and yelled back "No! I can do it on my own." So I let her.

We did make several stops on the way back, but believe it or not little Madison Ottley ran 3.2 miles with me absolutely alone and BAREFOOT! Now THAT is a feat (not to be confused with feet, of which the ones she possesses are very great) that I could not have accomplished at the tender age of ten. In fact, when I was ten I weighed about 200 pounds and it took me 18 minutes to run the mile in Gym!

Congratulations Maddie, and may the wind be always at your back!

Techno Jump Challenge

I see that nobody has taken the 7-minute techno jumping challenge. Come on...isn't anyone out there man (or woman) enough to give it a try?

The Walk

Today I was bored so I walked to the local Smith's grocery store. It is about 2 miles away. It took me about 40 minutes to walk there. Then, I got a free pop from a lady handing out samples. It was pretty good. It was that new 7-up "Plus" with no calories. And, it even has calcium in it! You can't get better than that.

So, after I got my free beverage I went outside to see if I could find a friend to hang out with. After about 20 failed attempts, I decided to walk back home. As I was standing up I saw my old (and I MEAN old) English teacher who retired at age 75. He taught at my local high school since it was built in 1965! I can't believe he is still alive. He is the most tenacious sap I have ever seen.

Anyway, after my run in with Mr. Reed, I decided to walk home. Half way through I visited a buddy of mine who was gone of course. So, then I walked home, and here I am now...4 miles older.

Forever - Vertical Horizon

Take these roses all from me
Let me live, let me be
For a little while
Let my eyes,
See everything and nothing in their time
I do not mind

Who've guess I'd learn
To let the walls around me burn
Light up the hillside
My words, I ate them for so long and nothing changed
It was just the same

And I don't know if you see me
But I can tell you your face is clear
I will see you...

Forever
Forever
I will see you
Forever
Forever

Call me close once again
Call me teacher, call me friend
Just like the first time
Call my name, it echos around me in this room
Its all you

I don't know if you hear me there
But it's dark so no one cares
I will hear you...

Forever
Forever
I will hear you
Forever
Forever

I wanted you to be everything to me
Now I've got to learn to carry on
I know I cannot hide this emptiness inside
But nothing is the same since you've gone

Send me letters from above
Send me strength, send me love
Such sweet love
Sing me songs that echo in my head and in my heart
That's where you are

And I don't know if you feel me here
I can tell you one thing that's clear
I will feel you...

Forever
Forever
I will feel you
Forever
Forever
I will hear you
Forever
Forever
I will see you
Forever
Forever

Take these roses all from me
Let me live, let me be

Skinny Makes For Fun Techno Dancing

I noticed something today. Dancing is funner when you are skinny. When I weigh less the dancing is free-er and I can get into the music more. I am going to lose AT LEAST 5 more pounds before I come to Hawaii, and the first dance of the semester is going toROCK! I am going to stay there all night and dance until my heart stops.

Here's an interesting excercise. Put on a good, 7-8 minute techno song and just jump. That is what techno dancing is essentially (jumping). Just keep jumping and don't decrease your intensity for the whole song. At the end of 7 minutes you'll know why people die at raves from dancing too much! Imagine doing thiss all night. No wonder they use drugs to do it! Anyway, you should have fun jumping for ten minutes to a good song so, go for it. See how long you can last!

Why The Goosemaster?

Many people have asked me about my email address. So, I have attached an explaination of why I chose the goose as my personal mascott. I hope you enjoy!
--------------------------------------------------------

WHY THE GOOSEMASTER?

When you see geese heading south for the winter, they fly along in a "V" formation. Have you ever wondered why they fly that way? It had been learned through scientific discovery that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a "V" formation the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. Friends who share a common direction and a sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier, because they are traveling on the trust of one another.

Whenevere a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into the formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are heading the same way we are going, that's another way of saying that by working in harmony we can accomplish greater things together.

When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and another goose flies "point". It pays to take turns doing hard jobs.....With geese flying south, or with other people. Do you have the mechanism in place for rotating the "hard" work?

The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What do we say when we honk from behind the people doing the work?

Finally, when a goose is sick, or is wounded by gunshot and falls out, two geese fall out of formation and follow him down to help and protect him. They stay with him until he is either able to fly or until he is dead, and then they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their original group. If people know we would stand by them like that, they would push down the walls to be here. That's caring for others.

You see, all we have to do in order to attract the best friends and keep them is to demonstrate to the world that we have as much sense as a goose!

Even geese have sense enough to know it works every time.
