Have you ever noticed that kids will do just about anything to catch your attention? Or sometimes they don't know that they are acting out of the ordinary, but indeed, they ARE? Well, yesterday I had one of these experiences. I run about 3 miles a day to stay in shape. Well, my whole family knows this, including the kids. Well, my little neice Maddie noticed that I was getting ready to go for my daily jog. She knows that I am going back to Hawaii in a couple days so she really wanted to hang out with me. As I ran out the door, she said "Stay." I turned around, looked at her and said: "O.K." and then I began my run.
She could not put up with this.
So, I run about two tenths of a mile and turn around and WHAT do I see? Little Maddie, all of 10 years old and three feet in height is running, full speed behind me. I was like: "Maddie, you have to turn around. I go for too far for you to follow me." To this all she would give me is an incessant "NO!" So I kept running thinking that she would get tired, fall behind, and quit and turn around.
NO WAY! By the time we got to the end of the neighborhood (1 mile) she was still running strong and asking me silly questions like: "Are you tired yet? I'm not tired."
So, I decided to let her come with me. Actually, I really don't think it was my decision.
At this point I think I should stop and mention something. Maddie was not wearing any shoes. She had just run a mile on gravel with me barefooted! I couldn't believe her tenacity!
So, at the 1.5 mile mark Maddie started to get tired. She told me she needed rests and yada yada. All the stuff you'd expect from a 10 year old girl. So, I asked her at about 1.7 miles if she wanted me to put her on my back and I'd piggy back her home. When I said this, she doubled her speed, got in front of me and yelled back "No! I can do it on my own." So I let her.
We did make several stops on the way back, but believe it or not little Madison Ottley ran 3.2 miles with me absolutely alone and BAREFOOT! Now THAT is a feat (not to be confused with feet, of which the ones she possesses are very great) that I could not have accomplished at the tender age of ten. In fact, when I was ten I weighed about 200 pounds and it took me 18 minutes to run the mile in Gym!
Congratulations Maddie, and may the wind be always at your back!
